Trends Word Art (No, Not THAT Kind!)

Word ArtWord art used to be a setting in Microsoft Word that brought a grimace and groan to every professional designer. Specifically when used by clients in sentences such as, "I've mocked it up for you with Word Art!" If you were afraid that was what this post was going to be about you can now let out that breath you've been holding. What I'm talking about today is actually incredible imagery created solely with WORDS!

I stumbled across this outstanding campaign on the Nebraska AIGA website for their 19th Annual Show. After spending an insane amount of time just looking at the pieces, I knew I needed to share my find. Check out these images—

After seeing these remarkable designs I knew I would have to try one myself. As many of you know I do all the marketing for my author grandmother, Barbara Howell ( I figured what better to play with than something that would tell her life story and correlate with her book. For those not familiar check out her site to get the full impact.

I decided to start with a simple shape, a saw blade and using illustrator was able to slowly build the shape out thanks to paths, etc. What I actually did was create a basic text outline of the words and placement I wanted to use and then go back in and begin playing with fonts, etc. While I'm not an expert with this yet, it is something I plan to use on projects in the future and something that I thought was a lot of fun.
